Thread Contributor: Maxwell_Edisonwhat do you think about the Radeon RX 480
#1
imo it seems like a pretty good, cheap budget card.  I'm especially excited for the 8gb model because something that cheap having that much vram is pretty unusual

now most games won't use more than 4gb and 6gb is probs the max anything would ever need, ESPECIALLY since the 480 is more budget and might not be maxing out games that would need 6gb+, but that being said it seems pretty powerful for it's price and i have a HUGE HARDON for high vram since my current/first GPU is a fucking 1gb radeon 7850 so it has not enough vram to do jack shit these days

I would've loved it a year ago, but I own a 970 and it's not worth upgrading right now :/

yeah I'm in the same boat I just upgraded to a 390 recently and it's def not worth, it actually seems like a downgrade. but if you are looking to actually upgrade from a pretty old card it seems worth

still not much of an upgrade over the 290 which is $170 second hand now

Well yeah, it's not designed as an upgrade for a mid-tier card, it's designed to be the new contender for cheap mid-tier card, so not many people will need to upgrade unless they had below that

when the non-reference models start coming out, which will change pricing, speed, cooling etc, it will likely shine as a better choice for it's price but is already a great deal

yeah I gOt a 390 too, but I think it was a was better choice then the 970.  The VRAM
is higher making it a bit more futureproof

it's the same price as a 390 or 970 new, so the hype is useless

Isn't the 390 300$ new?

I have a feeling he's going to say "oh it's the same price if you get a good deal on it" in which case the obvious rebuttal is "well then if I get a good deal on the 480 it's value will go even higher"

iirc the 480 is a little worse than the 390, but it's lowest price is 200$.  highest price being 240$ still makes it a good value, being slightly less expensive and also slightly less powerful.  I think it will be best Bang-for-buck, I can buy it even though I might want a better card, and not feel bad about it because it's a very low amount of money to spend.  I think it's a perfect mid-point for cards ATM

€269 = $297
RX 480 price for 8gb model: 240$ (or €216, going by google)

American-wise, that's bullshit, but I don't know what retarded system AMD has set you up with.

Currently, I'm finding a lot of 390s for $280-ish.  That's a 40$ difference for a GPU that's similar enough based on some tests i've seen to the 480
Obviously the 390 is more powerful, but the 480 also JUST RELEASED.  Given some time, with other manufacturers getting in on it, and when sales start happening, you cannot beat the 480's value.

I don't know if the other people in this thread realize that the 480 does best the 390/970... The 390/970 cost a bit more at the moment but they will eventually go way down in price BECAUSE the 480 beats the 970/390 in power efficiency and performace.

I'm guessing the last price for the 390/970 will be $200.  The 480 will cost around $60 more, but you'll eventually save that money in the 170W less.  (Comparing to 390)

Oh, didn't realize that
Regardless, IMO the price difference is good enough, especially for a first release - Maybe less so right now but within time the 480 will probably become a pretty good alternative for all of those.
